Aw look, it’s a new baby Jeep

My husband stood outside in the sun, still flush with the excitement from the delivery of his beautiful new baby. The look in his eyes said it all. Love. Pure and simple.

He had waited for so long for this day and now she was here in the flesh, or um, in the chrome and steel. Yes, cigars all around, we are now the proud owners of a Jeep Wrangler.

“Hey boys!” He called out excitedly to our children, “Come look at the new car. Isn’t it so cool?”

But our boys are too cool for cool. My oldest barely raised his brow, my middle one shrugged unimpressed and said, “Eh. It’s alright.”

But my little guy eagerly ran over to his daddy who scooped him up and looked at him expectantly. “I know how to spell Gum!” He exclaimed.

But stars in the eyes cannot so easily be put out. “We’re going for a drive!” My husband yelled, refusing to hear the chorus of boos from the mini peanut gallery.

We all piled in and started to drive as my husband pointed out what button did what and all the beloved features of his new baby. He took a deep satisfying breath. “Smell that?” He asked, his eyes a glimmer, “Nothing like new car smell.”

“This is so boring,” My middle guy droned.

“Where are we going?” My oldest wanted to know.

“Mommy, I had three brownies at the party,” My youngest confessed.

We drove through the wealthy part of our town where Richie Rich Mansions overlook the sound; so close yet quite untouchable with its own police department. It is beautiful and mouth dragging, except to the chorus in the back.

“Why can’t we live here?” Middle demanded accusingly.

“Why are we here?” Oldest whined annoyingly.

“Can we go play at that one?” Youngest wanted to know, pointing to a massive home with a Bentley and a Rolls parked on the drive and surrounded by its own ponds with a rowboat sitting idle.

We in the front do our best to enjoy riding in a cool car without a roof, the wind in our hair and visions of our twenties spread out before us like an open road.

But it is hard to ignore those in the back driving us crazy.

With nowhere to off road or the possibility of leaving our kids by the side of one, we head home. The boys climbed out, grateful to be released from what was apparently ‘the most boring ride ever’ and ran in the house to engage in more stimulating activities like sitting on the couch and playing with iPhones.

“Are you coming in?” I asked when my husband lingered in the driveway.

“In a minute,” he said, his eyes fixed on the perfect form, beautiful coloring and shiny exterior.

I nodded and left the two of them alone. I had a feeling he would be spending a lot of quality time with this new baby, the one who didn’t talk but purred.

Right now I think it’s his favorite.

  2. If that car could make him a sandwich, he’d probably move out.

  3. Maybe the boys will come around if he takes them off-roading. My dad had a Jeep when I was young, lots of fond memories! (^_^)

  5. Boys and their toys. Ah, yes. My brother went out and bought a Mustang convertible, the car he had in his youth (only it was used) without telling my sister-in-law! When I turn 60, I want a red convertible. Just to have one. Love this post!

  6. My daughter saved for her Jeep since she was 10. She’s 20 now, and her Wrangler is named Hugo (as in wherever Hugo I go). I think it’s ridiculous, her dad LOVES it. New reader from WOM.

  10. Loved the comments from your kids. And I remember my sister and I made the same kinds of comments when we were young and my parents wanted to go for a ride!

For some reason, none of the men in my life (starting with my father, through my husband and our sons) have had a “thing” for cars, viewing them at best as transportation and, at worst, as a necessary evil.

  15. This is so relatable, so perfect! I have thought of a Jeep Wrangler as a dream car and someday I want to get one. Your husband’s baby looks like a beauty! I hope he gets a ton of enjoyment out of it. I’m sure he will. As for the back seat party poopers, yep, I know how that is. I’ve got two boys – 14 and 8. My teen is bored always and grunts at me if anything, and my youngest is the enthusiastic one. Thank goodness there’s still some cuteness and enthusiasm around, right? I loved this story and the analogy.

  16. LOL Men are funny with their big toys. I think the boys will enjoy off roading, my kids used to love it.
My husband works at a dealership so every time I bond with a car, he brings me another. I shouldn’t complain and he does get upset when I don’t shriek with excitement at the shiny newness.
    Safe Jeeping!!

Haha! I had a brand new car on lease with my last job before I went freelance and when it arrived I was pretty much like your husband! My. Husband thought I’d lost the plot! I just stood in the street staring at it, then would go out driving to nowhere, just to see the mileage go up from 0 to 10 to 50!!! Now I work as a freelancer Im back in an old banger that breaks down all the time!

  21. Men and cars! OY! My first intro to being a car-widow was my first boyfriend (16 yrs.old). He spent more time on that souped up engine than me and it was hard to contain my jealousy. Looking back, I really like the idea that he took so much pride in something. And, nowadays I’m glad my husband loves our vehicles so much, because it inspires him to keep them maintained. A task, that I would not do well or at all. Great writing. Very relatable.

  24. This new addition is going to fit right into the family. (; This also reminded me of when my dad got his new baby. Of course, we all had to go with him when he picked it up and drive around. I tried to be interested, but my brothers only bewailed an hour lost of their precious lives.

  27. Jeeps are wonderful, but I’m too old and achy for the wrangler. It’ll probably be the new Cherokee (not grand) for me next time around …

  28. What is it about guys and cars without roofs? My husband has one too, and it’s like a child. I mostly don’t see what all the fuss is about, except that they look pretty sexy driving them 🙂
